Claude Pro vs Max: is the $100 plan worth it?
Updated October 28, 2026 · Sources linked below
Short answer: Stay on Pro ($20/mo, or $17/mo billed annually) unless you hit its limit most days. Max 5x ($100/mo) is for people who work in Claude or Claude Code for hours a day. Max 20x ($200/mo) is for all-day heavy use. If you only hit the limit now and then, turning on usage credits or waiting for the 5-hour reset is cheaper than upgrading.

Usage is shared across Claude on web, desktop and mobile, and Claude Code. Anthropic doesn't publish a fixed message count, because usage depends on the model, conversation length and features you use. Check where you stand in Settings, then Usage.
Upgrade to Max if you…
- Hit the Pro limit most days and wait for resets
- Run long Claude Code sessions or hand Claude long background tasks
- Would use the monthly API credits to build on the Claude Platform
- Want Fable inside your plan's limits instead of paying for it with usage credits
Stay on Pro if you…
- Hit the limit only once in a while. Usage credits or the 5-hour reset will cover it
- Want a yearly discount. Max has no annual plan, while Pro is $200/yr
- Use Claude mainly for writing and documents. Pro already includes Opus, Research and Claude Code. See ChatGPT vs Claude
Good to know before you switch
- Upgrading takes effect right away, and your usage starts fresh on Max limits. Unused Pro time is credited.
- Moving from annual Pro to Max: if the rest of your annual plan is worth more than Max, the difference is kept as account credit.
- Downgrading back to Pro takes effect at the end of your billing period.
- Anthropic says it doesn't offer standing discounts on Pro or Max.

Frequently asked questions
How much is Claude Max?
Max 5x is $100 a month and Max 20x is $200 a month, per Anthropic's help center as checked October 28, 2026. Those are web prices. Mobile app pricing may differ. Max is billed monthly only.
What's the difference between Claude Pro and Claude Max?
Usage, mainly. Pro gives at least 5x the Free plan's usage per 5-hour session. Max gives 5x or 20x Pro's usage per session. Max also adds higher output limits, early access to advanced features, priority access at busy times, and monthly API credits ($100 on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x). Claude Code, Opus and Research are already in Pro.
Can I pay for Claude Max yearly?
No. Anthropic says Max is monthly only. Pro is the plan with an annual option: $200 a year, which works out to $17 a month.
I keep hitting the Claude Pro limit. Do I have to upgrade?
No. On paid plans you can turn on usage credits and keep working at standard API rates, or wait for your 5-hour session to reset. If you hit the limit most days, Max 5x is usually simpler. Upgrading takes effect right away, and unused Pro time is credited.
