Which AI subscription should you cancel?

Short answer: Keep the one you actually opened this week and cancel or downgrade the rest. The most common waste is paying $20 twice for the same job, for example ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro for everyday questions and emails.
The 5-minute checklist
- Which did you open in the last 7 days? Anything you haven't opened in a week is the first to go.
- Do two of them do the same job for you? If both are for writing emails and answering questions, keep one. Use the other's free tier as a backup.
- Do you hit limits on the one you keep? If not, a cheaper tier (below) is probably enough.
- Are you using the extras? Google AI Pro includes 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite. X Subscription plans include X Premium perks once you connect your X account. If you use those, the plan may be worth keeping for them alone.
- When does each one renew? Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date.
Step down instead of canceling
| If you pay for… | Cheaper option | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo) | Go ($8/mo in the US, may include ads) or Free | Plus-tier reasoning models and higher limits |
| ChatGPT Pro ($100 / $200 / $500) | A lower Pro tier, or Plus ($20) | Usage allowance. Ultrafast is only on Pro 500 |
| Claude Pro, monthly ($20) | Keeping it? Annual billing is $17/mo ($200/yr). Otherwise, Free | On Free: Opus, Research and Claude Code. Free allows up to 5 projects |
| Claude Max (from $100) | Pro ($20, or $17/mo annual) | 5× or 20× Pro usage, priority access, monthly API credits |
| Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo) | Google AI Plus ($4.99/mo) | Storage drops from 5 TB to 400 GB. You also lose Gemini 4 Argon access and YouTube Premium Lite |
| X Subscription Premium ($30/mo) | Plus ($8/mo, or $80/yr) | Grok Bot, and 4× the usage of Plus |
Before downgrading Google AI Pro, check how much storage you use. The free Google account includes 15 GB.
How to cancel each one
- ChatGPT: cancel where you subscribed: ChatGPT settings, Apple, or Google Play. You can normally keep using the plan until the end of the billing period. Deleting the app doesn't cancel it.
- Claude: on web or desktop, go to Settings, then Billing, then Cancel. App Store or Google Play subscriptions are canceled in that store. The plan stays active until the period ends, then your account moves to Free. Your chats, projects and files stay.
- Google AI plans: manage the plan from your Google One or Gemini subscription settings. Google says you can cancel anytime, with no refunds for partial billing periods except where the law requires them.
- Grok / X Subscription: xAI says to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal. Existing SuperGrok and X Premium plans continue unless you change or cancel them.
Not sure which one to keep? The 7-question quiz picks one based on what you actually do, and "stay free" is a possible result.
Frequently asked questions
Should I pay for both ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro?
Usually not. Both cost $20 a month and cover most of the same everyday jobs. Keep the one you open most and use the other's free tier. Paying for both makes sense mainly if you regularly hit the limits on one of them.
Do I get a refund if I cancel in the middle of a billing period?
Usually not. Google says there are no refunds for partial billing periods except where the law requires them. Anthropic says Claude payments are generally non-refundable except where its terms or local law say otherwise. OpenAI says refund eligibility depends on your purchase and that canceling doesn't automatically refund earlier charges. In each case you normally keep access until the period ends.
When should I cancel so I'm not charged again?
Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date. Anthropic and xAI both say this on their pricing pages. Canceling stops the next renewal, and you keep your plan until the end of the period you already paid for.
I subscribed on my iPhone or Android phone. Where do I cancel?
Cancel in the store you paid through. OpenAI and Anthropic both say App Store and Google Play subscriptions are canceled there, and deleting the app doesn't cancel the subscription.
